In addition to the historic Presidential race, in California we have several propositions on the ballot that are expected to influence future legislation across the country, whether they pass or not.

Sea mentioned Props 7 and 10, which both refer to energy policy. Prop 2 touches on another emotional topic, the humane treatment of farm animals.

Prop 2 is co-sponsored by the Humane Society and Farm Sanctuary. It proposes that farms be required to provide, by 2015, at least enough space for animals to stand, turn and stretch their limbs.

This seems simple enough — of course animals deserve pens big enough to stand in! — but of course it raises all kinds of economic issues. It costs money to retrofit a farm, and that cost gets passed through to the consumer.

It’s mainly chicken farms that will be impacted if the proposition passes. The “threat” is that we’ll have to truck in eggs from other states, and Mexico, or even China, if this passes.

It’s hard to believe that it’s less expensive to import eggs from Asia, but people say all kinds of things during an election.

Even more surprisingly, far left vegans are decrying this law as a lame effort to make meat eaters feel less guilty about their habits. Some of them are campaigning against Prop 2 because they don’t think we should have food farms at all.

If you’re swayed by celebrity endorsements, then you’ll probably vote yes on Prop 2, along with Ellen Degeneres. If you prefer to get all the facts and decide for yourself, the League of Women Voters has a nice, concise list of pros and cons for Prop 2 to help you.

Just remember, the most important thing is that you get out there and vote!
